A few of us volunteered to teach Primary English and Mathematics tuition for the Poor and Needy Ministry in our church. Well, Ee Leen kinda lured me into it.
During the first meeting last Sunday, we bought went in thinking that the classes would be one-on-one sessions. When they started talking about voice projection and various details, we knew they were talking about a CLASS of students. Of course, being first-timers, we panicked.
I just got back from another meeting with the other volunteers. And the adults involved definitely encouraged and assured us that we will be fine with the Lord's guidance.
Personally, I am more comfortable with Math because I seriously don't know how to teach English. Sorry to say this, but I have given back all the technical terms and concepts to my English teachers. Other than nouns and verbs, I don't know how to explain the others.
As we were flipping through the workbooks earlier, we tried to grasp the concept. Most of us wanted to teach Math at first, but in the end we decided to take up both subjects to help out more.
This would be an interesting challenge for us as most of the students do not have a strong background in the language, especially English. All we can do is do our parts by preparing every week, and God will walk us through the rest of it.
I was worried at first. But after much encouragement from the adults, we gained a little more confidence. So I can't wait to start my first teaching experience! We're talking about a person's education here. Don't play, play! lol
I hope we will be able to go down to the children's level and think simple!
Now, time to recall the most simple calculation methods without using the calculator! When we were looking at the fractions chapter in the Math workbook, we almost forgot the method! Thank God that tiny bit of what's left of my primary education is still functioning. Looking forward to the next four months! :D
